Abstract
Hegel updates the original critical impulse of philosophy when he investigates what thinking is and, consequently, why the modern critical tradition refrains from a deeper understanding of thinking, whether if thinking thinks itself (philosophy of self-critical consciousness) or thinking thinks the divine as an intangible and ungraspable alterity in concepts (philosophy of the divine being as a discipline distinct from theology). According to Hegel, modern philosophy reflects on the divine without adequately discerning the substantial differences between being, thinking, objectivity, and subjectivity. Based on these problematic assumptions, this article demonstrates that Hegel reconsiders the ultimate goal of philosophy when he (re)poses radical and troubling questions: How does philosophical consciousness emerge? What, ultimately, is philosophy concerned with? If the divine is, in short, irreducible to concepts and, therefore, ineffable, is there any discourse that philosophically and truthfully rationalizes the divine?
