Abstract
En relación con el tema de la 36ª Conferencia Anual de la Asociación de Estudios Caribeños: “La construcción de una casa nueva: hacia nuevos futuros caribeños en una era de incertidumbre”, este discurso inaugural acomete la exploración de dos tendencias que han caracterizado hasta ahora los estudios caribeños: una basada en la metáfora de la isla y la otra, en la perspectiva sinecdóquica. Después de mencionar algunos ejemplos de estudios guiados por tales aproximaciones y de analizar sus riesgos y consecuencias, se bosquejan otros ejemplos que promueven esa construcción hacia un futuro de integración caribeña. Esto último, se afirma, no sucederáa menos que una mentalidad descolonizada permee los estudios de, en y desde el Caribe.
