Abstract
Este trabajo describe a grandes rasgos cómo surgieron las literaturas de Surinam desde las literaturas puramente orales hasta lo que son hoyen día: un conjunto altamente heterogéneo de literaturas en varias lenguas (entre las cuales el neerlandés-surinamés, el sranan tongo y el sarnami son las más importantes). Las literaturas orales todavía existen en lenguas de los cimarrones y los amerindios. La sociedad de plantación a final del siglo xviii vio la aparición de una infraestructura de periódicos, establecimientos de imprenta, casas editoriales y sociedades científicas. El siglo xviii vio nacer las primeras novelas y los primeros escritos en lenguas creoles. Desde la segunda mitad del siglo xx, se dio una mayor producción de novelas y aún más colecciones de poesía, principalmente de tema nacionalista. Para el final del siglo, sobresalieron muchas escritoras que trataron de retratar la identidad surinamesa en historias de esclavitud y refinamiento psicológico.
