Abstract
Los estudios caribeños son hoy un campo académico tan exitoso eimportante, como nuevo y periférico aún. A History of Literature in the Caribbean, vol. 2, (AHLC), es un libro clave para este campo. Es un compendio de ensayos diverso y ambicioso, determinado por un ímpetu enciclopédico y totalizador, que ofrece una mirada panóptica del Caribe. El libro tiene, habría que admitirlo, un afán centrípeto de una región definida precisamente por su carácter centrífugo. Pero no por esto cojea; la heterogeneidad de sus autores, temas y líneas de investigación vuelven lo enciclopédico un espacio de diversidad al incluir voces y temas poco comunes. Hay que notar que esta “historia literaria” no es más que una posible entre muchas, “a history”. Es, también, un libro necesario.
Robustece ejes críticos y teóricos del Caribe revelando su impacto y pertinencia en los estudios literarios, pero a la vez establece la precariedad de los estudios caribeños al revelar lo poco que se sabe sobre algunos temas. En muchos casos, el compendio es más un proyecto en construcción que un texto finalizado, pues, aunque sea una “historia” que surge de la consolidación de infraestructuras
