Abstract

Memory alterations are common in patients with acquired brain damage (ABD) and are among their most frequently reported cognitive complaints. Despite its importance for daily functioning, spatial memory in ABD has been relatively underexplored. This systematic review aimed to advance understanding of current neuropsychological interventions to rehabilitate spatial memory in patients with ABD. Findings reveal a growing interest in the use of computerized tasks and virtual reality, in addition to two training strategies: increasing task difficulty and errorless learning. Studies employing computerized tasks have demonstrated greater effectiveness when using large screens and proximal landmarks. The results suggest the need for further research to more accurately describe the participant samples and to rigorously assess the effectiveness of computerized and virtual reality-based interventions.
