Background: Dental prostheses, for instance, individual crowns, could fail due to a series of risk and clinical factors. This warrants conducting permanent evaluations of treatment and follow-up processes in clinics where dentists are being trained. Purpose: To evaluate biological and functional factors associated with the rate of success of individual crowns cemented at a university pre-doctoral dental service. Methods: This descriptive study, case series, evaluated 30 single metal-ceramic crowns placed in 17 patients at Manizales Autonomous University in Colombia. Biological, mechanical, and functional criteria were evaluated through clinical and radiographic evaluations, in order to identify the most frequent reversible and irreversible complications. Results: 28 single crowns met the prosthetic survival parameters. Reversible complications related to alterations of periodontal tissues and occlusal contacts were identified. Two single crowns showed irreversible complications caused by marginal decay and marginal discrepancies. Neither pulpal alterations, nor dental, nor prosthetic fractures were observed. Conclusion: The findings of this case series confirm what is reported in the literature and the need to continuously control and follow up prosthetic treatments.
