Abstract
Dentro de nuestra historia americana uno de los temas más controvertidos ha sido el de la Encomienda. Sus causas, sus medios y sus consecuencias se han criticado hasta el punto de convertirse en una leyenda aterradora, muchas veces basadas en graves prejuicios.
Se han realizado estudios de fondo que tratan el problema exclusivamente desde el lado cualitativo. Han estudiado los rasgos de bondad y preocupación presentados por los reyes españoles con respecto del indígena, las leyes que lo apoyaron y se ha llegado a especular sobre los problemas de exterminación premeditada, explotación sistemática y justicia inhumana cometida por esta institución.
