Abstract

Dentro de nuestra historia americana uno de los temas más controvertidos ha sido el de la Encomienda. Sus causas, sus me­dios y sus consecuencias se han criticado hasta el punto de conver­tirse en una leyenda aterradora, muchas veces basadas en graves prejuicios.

Se han realizado estudios de fondo que tratan el problema ex­clusivamente desde el lado cualitativo. Han estudiado los rasgos de bondad y preocupación presentados por los reyes españoles con respecto del indígena, las leyes que lo apoyaron y se ha llegado a especular sobre los problemas de exterminación premeditada, explotación sistemática y justicia inhumana cometida por esta insti­tución.
