Abstract

Como resultado de una primera experiencia investigativa en el Archivo Histórico Nacional, el presente artículo es apenas un enun­ciado del problema etnohistórico concerniente al sistema de sucesión de cacicazgos en un grupo indígena colombiano ya extinguido: los guane.

En el siglo XVI, el asentamiento de los guane se ubicaría en
Santander del Sur, concretamente en las hoyas de los ríos Suárez y
Fonce. Lingüísticamente se colocan dentro de la familia Chibcha, por
ser su lengua muy semejante a la de los muisca y a pesar de la ve-
cindad de grupos con lenguas de familia Karib, como los yareguíes,,
los carare, los opón.
