Abstract
Los Kofán son un grupo indígena de lengua Chibcha que habita en la Intendencia del Putumayo, hacia la parte alta de la Amazonia, cerca ya de los contrafuertes de la cordillera andina. Su habitat propio se encuentra entre los 0o y 1o de longitud Norte del Ecuador, y entre los 76° y 77° de latitud O. de G. Grupo antiguamente numeroso, se ha reducido actualmente a menos de un millar de habitantes, concentrados principalmente en las reservas de San Antonio del Guamuéz y la Hormiga de Yarinal. Algunas familias viven aisladas en lugares como Santa Elena del Guamuéz, el Churuyaco, el río San Miguel y Santa Rosa de Sucumbíos. Otra gran cantidad de Kofán está radicada en el Ecuador.
