Abstract
Este trabajo fue escrito para el Programa GOLAG (Georgetown Organization for Latin American Concern), para la atención de salud básica y dental, que se llevó a cabo en el área rural de los Municipios de Guateque y Garagoa, en el Departamento de Boy acá; con la participación de profesores y estudiantes de la Universidad Javeriana y Georgetown University de Washington, en el mes de julio, 1982 y 1983.
Se analizan las condiciones de vida del campesinado de Boyacá, los factores ecológicos, socio-económicos y culturales que están afectando la salud de estas poblaciones y que deben ser tenidos en cuenta en el diseño de programas de salud. Así mismo, se describe brevemente la medicina indígena y la medicina popular, con el fin de mostrar, cómo en el país coexisten diferentes sistemas de práctica médica arraigados en el pasado y en las costumbres de las gentes, que deben ser respetados, estudiados, investigados y evaluados para integrar los conocimientos y prácticas valiosos a la práctica médica occidental, siguiendo la política de la Organización Mundial de la Salud de: "Salud para todos en el año 2.000".
