Abstract
Desde hace aproximadamente 4 años la Escuela Colombiana de Medicina ha iniciado un proceso de contacto con las comunidades de los barrios nor-orientales de Bogotá, en la intención de crear un espacio docente, asistencial e investigativo que permitiera poner en contacto al estudiante de Medicina y Odontología con la problemática de salud que deberá enfrentar en su ejercicio profesional. Como médico general en Servicio Social Obligatorio, egresado de la Escuela, me vinculé con el Área Comunitaria hace 3 años para coordinar el Programa de Atención Primaria de Salud con participación de la comunidad, en el Centro de Salud Comunitario del barrio Cerro Norte. Desde el enfrenta-miento médico a los problemas de salud-enfermedad en este ambiente se ha hecho necesario abordar, como parte del conocimiento de la comunidad, su propia manera de enfrentarlos basada en las distintas prácticas médicas no científicas históricamente construidas. Es en este contexto como debe verse mi interés en el problema de la medicina popular en las comunidades urbanas marginales, es decir, como parte de mi práctica médica diaria.
