Abstract
En este artículo se incluye la historia del fracaso de la Ferrería de Samacá (Boyacá) trabajado como un estudio de caso, cuyo principal objetivo es identificar los problemas sufridos por la empresa. Estos problemas a su vez iluminan los sufridos por otras empresas industriales que se desarrollaron en el siglo XIX en Colombia.
Esta terrería, o industria productora de hierro, adoleció de muchos problemas -económicos, e institucionales (políticos, culturales, sociales). La hipótesis que se trata de probar es que a pesar de la magnitud de los problemas económicos, no fueron estos los que condujeron al fracaso de la empresa. Con los recursos económicos existentes la empresa habría podido progresar; pero fueron los factores institucionales los que la llevaron a la quiebra.
Este trabajo es la tesis de Master de la autora, que fue dirigida por el historiador Frank Safford, en Northwestern University, Illinois.
