Abstract
Es sensato pensar que las definiciones de arte, en tanto actividad humana, estén sometidas a condiciones que impone el contexto histórico y cultural (Davis, 2001). Lo que no surge frecuentemente de esa reflexión es la idea de que, a su vez, tales definiciones históricas restringen y posibilitan las prácticas artísticas que puntualizan. A menudo, asumimos la delimitación de los campos del arte como categorías naturales, especialmente en relación a los usos que podemos darle a dichos campos en la vida cotidiana. Así, entendemos el ámbito de la música como diferente al de la pintura o la escultura. Del mismo modo, nos explicamos ciertos productos artísticos dentro de la categoría del drama, diferenciándolos de aquellos que ubicamos bajo la definición de danza. Sin embargo, estas categorías, utilizadas para pensar los fenómenos estéticos, son relativamente recientes en la historia de occidente, particularmente configuradas en la Modernidad.
