The jungle devoured them: Research + creation journeys

Abstract

This article aims to trace the creative operations that took place in the research + creation project Live Theater/Virtual Theater supported by the Research Vice-Rectory of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Bogotá headquarters. This project took as a starting point, José Eustasio Rivera’s La vorágine, regarding the commemoration of its hundred years of publication, to question the extractivist paradigm and to imagine possibilities to resavage the world from the arts. As a methodological route, the project reviewed critical bibliography on La vorágine, analyzed different stage versions of the novel, and implemented performative strategies such as travel, creative laboratories, and dismantling. The project’s result is a staging entitled The Jungle Devoured Them, composed of several devices that migrate through different formats: the voice performance, the radio-drama theater, live arts performance, and the performative lecture.
