Abstract
Rebeca is one of Bogota’s most traditional sculptures. The Ministry of Infrastructure, with the conservativepolitician Laureano Gomez at its head, bought it in 1926 to place it in a strategic setting. But by choosing a neoclassic piece they establishedthat particular aesthetic as socially acceptedand they turned their backs to other artistic expressions. The text also goes over the imaginaries thathave been created around the sculpture and, usingpublic documents from that time, it sets straightthe piece’s authorship, which had been wronglyattributed for over 50 years.
