Abstract
This paper analyzes the short story “Things We Lost in the Fire” by Mariana Enriquez (2016). The analysis explores the construction of the feminine through the lens of the monstrous-feminine and the poetics of the perverse, highlighting the interplay of elements and themes present in the author’s work while employing the concept of the fantastic as an aesthetic mode (Roas 2011). These themes are further enriched by the notions of abjection, disgust, biopolitics, and body horror. The analysis offers a perspective that challenges some of the previous interpretations, instead proposing a view of the story as a marginal space that generates new lines of inquiry. Ultimately, it positions the narrative as an alternative space of resistance.
