Abstract
La idea central del presente artículo es discutir cuáles son las actitudes, las percepciones y los
comportamientos de los hombres con respecto al uso de condones, la práctica de la vasectomía
y los chequeos de próstata. El artículo está basado en 40 entrevistas efectuadas entre hombres
residentes de la norteña ciudad fronteriza de Tijuana, Baja California (México). En este artículo
presentamos la manera como los hombres de Tijuana y sus familias negocian y deciden acerca
del número de hijos deseados, y acerca de las diferentes percepciones y actitudes de hombres
y mujeres en relación con el sexo y la reproducción. Deseamos señalar que esta temática de la
“salud reproductiva” muestra la manera en que las familias negocian y deciden las medidas de
planeación de los hijos. Este tipo de negociación y las respectivas decisiones que se toman están
conformadas de ambivalencias, contradicciones, imposiciones, y en muchos casos, de respeto
y cooperación. Deseamos indicar que no todo es blanco o negro, y que las decisiones que se
toman no son simples y están acompañadas de discusión y conflicto.
