Abstract
En este artículo se describen la situación y tendencias de la epidemia del VIH/sida en los órdenes
global y nacional, con énfasis en su impacto en la población femenina y en los factores
determinantes de la mayor vulnerabilidad de la mujer, señalando acciones prioritarias requeridas
para reducir esta vulnerabilidad, determinada históricamente por el contexto cultural machista
y de inequidad de género. La mayoría de las mujeres latinoamericanas aún viven en
condiciones de inferioridad social resultantes de la perpetuación de las desigualdades de género.
En Colombia se observa un progresivo aumento del porcentaje de transmisión heterosexual
del VIH, en particular, en la región Caribe. El abordaje de la epidemia desde una perspectiva de
género contribuye a la construcción de políticas públicas más equitativas y favorables para las
mujeres. Se requiere con urgencia la implementación de estrategias fundamentales como la
educación sexual y el fortalecimiento de los servicios de salud sexual y reproductiva.
