Abstract
Se hace una revisión del contexto en el cual surgen las reformas de los sistemas de salud y se
analiza con sentido crítico como éstos condicionan muchas de las conformaciones del proceso
en Latinoamérica y el Caribe. Se discuten los aspectos políticos del proceso y se develan algunos
resultados de la reforma en relación con la equidad, universalidad y adecuación de las
respuestas a la naturaleza de los problemas que enfrentan los sistemas latinoamericanos de
salud. Se debate la relación entre teoría política y reforma de los sistemas de salud y se extraen
conclusiones acerca de este complejo proceso para las realidades latinoamericanas y caribeñas.
