Abstract

This article describes facilitators and recommendations from HIV clinic healthcare providers for the PrEP implementation  in Colombia. A qualitative study was conducted with semi-structured interviews with 20 healthcare providers from 9 clinics. The “Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research” was used to guide the content analysis of the findings. The results were: Intervention: providers recognize PrEP as an innovative therapy, with proven effectiveness; recommend that it should be implemented by national regulations of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, with centralized purchase of medicines and adaptations to regional diversities. To assemble PrEP in the clinics, they recommend articulating it to sexual health preventive programs, guided by trained interdisciplinary teams. Outer setting: it was recommended to strengthen networking with the health secretaries, Profamilia, and LGTBI organizations; change contracting conditions with Health Promotion Entities to include PrEP directed at couples of patients with HIV, and finance with public resources those who cannot pay. Inner setting: climate and availability of implementation perceived as favorable for the adoption of PrEP; To reduce organizational tensions due to change, they recommend expanding training plans. Implementation process: the design of national, local and institutional plans is recommended, as well as the attraction of key internal and external leaders. It is concluded that the health providers of the HIV clinics in Colombia perceive a favorable environment for the adoption of PrEP in the country.
