Abstract

The discovery at the General Military Archives in Madrid, Spain, of a vast collection of historical documents related to the history of Puerto Rico originated various projects that constitute the narrative for this article. Among them, the book "Documentation of Puerto Rico" at the General Military Archives, published by the Spain Ministry of Defense; the same as the permanent Exhibiion: "San Juan the City that Grew beyond its Walls" in San Cristóbal Castle at San Juan, Puerto Rico; together with the publication of the Catalogue under the same title, both sponsored by the United States National Park Service. Each one of these projects were carried out individually, at same time remained faithful to the original idea spouted as result of the 1998 discovery at the General Military Archives in Spain: the rescue of documentation of Puerto Rico at the Spanish Archives. Without any doubt, the contribution of each one of those projects has reaffirmed the incalculable value not only of the new sources but of the deed for their rescue itself. To inform about this projects as samples could lead to similar projects on Documentary Recovery of the American Fortifications is the seed wanted to be shared through this lecture.
