Abstract

Molina de Aragón is a town from the Middle-Ages, capital of the mannorship of Molina, whose strategic location in the border between the kingdoms of Castilla and Aragón, together with the ruling of repopulation, and agricultural-, cattle- and forest-richness fostered the urban settlements. On a side going to the south over the valley of Gallo River, this fortification is located at almost 100 meters high over the valley where the neighboring population is settled. This wall is the typical alcazaba from the early Middle-Ages where an extensive site includes inside the whole building. Today, the castle is one of the most important fortified military spaces from the Middle-Ages. The Aragón Tower is still standing as well as four towers, out of six, that are now in a consolidated ruin condition and were restored in an undesirable manner. What encouraged the construction of such a fortification in these lands? Why is it called the Castle of Molina de Aragón if it is located in Castilla? How has it resisted the passing of time since the Middle-Ages? What can be learned from its design to apply in the contemporary architecture? Why is it closed as a property in consolidated ruin instead of reactivating it for a tourism and cultural use?
