Abstract

Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in making decisions that lead to a satisfying and healthy life. While everyone possesses emotional intelligence to some extent, the development of these abilities can vary among individuals. Two factors that have been found to influence emotional intelligence are personality traits and parental rearing. For this reason, this study explored the relationship of emotional intelligence with personality traits and perceived parenting. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with a sample of 255 Mexican young adults, with an average age of 23.1 years. The study employed the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i-M20), the Scale for Measuring Perceived Parental Rearing in Young Adults, and the Big Five Inventory (BFI-15p). The results show that personality traits and the perception of parental interest, support, and guidance were found to be significant predictors of higher emotional intelligence. Additionally, the perception of parental rearing exhibited gender-specific associations with emotional intelligence, with stronger correlations observed in women. Therefore, it is important to promote parenting practices that encourage the development of socio-emotional competencies in women and men, recognizing that emotional intelligence is influenced by the individual's personality traits and their perception of positive parenting.
