Purpose

After considering the value that Universitas Odontologica brings to the School of Dentistry, including its 43 years of existence, its editorial and scientific quality, its leadership and expertise, its influence in university accreditation, its international visibility, primarily in Latin America, and the connections it generates with Javeriana graduates, it was decided to keep the journal active and independent [1]. To this end, the following actions are proposed for development and evaluation in the 2025-2028 three-year period:

Content

  1. Reduce the number of documents published per annual volume to 10-12 original articles and one editorial – editorial policy.
  2. Invite highly visible authors and publish highly citable articles (e.g., methodology articles) – visibility and prestige.
  3. Insist that authors include Ibero-American references – fulfillment of the mission and vision.
  4. Publish exemplary articles from Javeriana in each volume that pass the peer-review process – institutional research (maximum one or two per volume).
  5. These articles may be teaching products from Javeriana (e.g., each curricular change) that are not restricted by the faculty regulations – Dental Education Section.
  6. Publishing Processes and Strategies
  7. Recover digitized back issues with Javeriana Publishing and publish them – collection and technology.
  8. Incorporate the use of artificial intelligence tools to optimize and streamline the evaluation and publication processes – process optimization.
  9. Find ways to recognize the contributions of referees and members of committees and editorial boards – editorial policy.
  10. Create new alliances with national and international academic and professional organizations – positioning policy.

Indexing and visibility

  1. Manage the journal's inclusion in regionally relevant bibliographic information systems—databases and indexes (e.g., DOAJ and Latindex 2.0) – indexing.
  2. Review and create strategies to meet the criteria for the journal's inclusion in the Medline and Scopus indexes, setting a submission date – indexing.
  3. Motivate authors, followers, and the academic community to cite Universitas Odontologica in other publications – communication and positioning.
  4. Create new channels on social media and services such as YouTube. All new content will be communicated on the Faculty's channels and in the journal – communication.

School of Dentistry

  1. Establish as a Faculty policy to include articles from Universitas Odontologica in the syllabi and institutional documents with bibliographies – curriculum.
  2. Work with graduate methodology advisors to ensure that the journal is cited in the papers and ensure that they are of publishable quality (this is an international trend in the discipline) – curriculum and formative research.
  3. Train the next generation. It is suggested to work with students from research incubators who work on specific projects for the journal – next generation.
  4. Disseminate published articles on the Faculty's networks and media – communication.
  5. Include articles that report on the social appropriation of the Faculty's research and work in society (transfer to society) – Faculty publications.
  6. Promote the journal at all academic and professional events attended by faculty representatives – institutional policy.
  7. Create a section for key documents of the School of Dentistry, including historical and institutional documents, dissemination of promotions and lists of undergraduate theses, and the Academic Career Assessment Model, among others. Non-disclosure of events or conferences – journal sections.
  8. Presentation of the journal at national and international meetings to attract citations and promote publications in English.
  9. Conduct systematic literature reviews in research centers using keywords from Universitas Odontológica.
  10. Inclusion of citations to the journal in undergraduate theses as part of the theoretical framework.
  11. Invitation to graduates to publish studies that adhere to the journal's guidelines.
  12. Encourage professors in general with a predominant research or teaching activity to publish in Latin American journals and cite the journal.
  13. Create a "Mentorship" Project to empower, encourage, and support professors who have supervised undergraduate theses in dental specialties with a predominant teaching activity to be mentored by a professor with a predominant research activity.

Funding

  1. Explore the possibility of attracting unconditional donations from commercial companies to fund the journal, assigning this task to a specific person – donations.
  2. Explore the possibility and conditions for migrating from the Diamond open access format of the publication to the Gold format, that is, charging authors for publication with open access for readers – fee-for-publication.

[1] Dr. Carlos Gómez Restrepo, dean of the School of Medicine, was consulted on October 30, 2024, who recommended maintaining the journal, not merging it with other health journals, and implementing positioning strategies.
