Abstract
Quizá le han sido atribuidas al naturalismo más cualidades de las que tal ideología del arte —mejor que movimiento— pudo aspirar a tener. Si evolucionó del realismo o fue su punto límite, de exageración del objetivismo respecto del mundo social o psicológico, tal vez nunca se arrogó el derecho de ser más interpretativo de las condiciones históricas del hombre. Si Balzac es un creador de personajes-tipo, Zola no cree que sus personajes fueran representativos más que de sí mismos y de sus traumas y aberraciones más íntimos, traumas y aberraciones que, finalmente, dicen más de la sociedad que los esquemáticos caracteres balzacianos. Zola relativiza la idea realista de descripción crítica de la sociedad —y Víctor Hugo llamó a la sociedad una "naturaleza de civilización"—, aclarando que lo "descrito" en primer plano es un temperamento, aquél por el cual se mira hacia la sociedad, o hacia ese "rincón de naturaleza" que nunca tiene forma fija, nunca es un todo. Con lo cual se propone, para las generaciones y siglos siguientes (los "siglos de la novela", que aún vivimos) que todo realismo literario es un idealismo hermenéutico, interesado.
