Abstract
Introduction. The implementation of Normal Birth Centers (NBC) is an instrument of the health network that stimulates female protagonism and autonomy and the application of good evidence-based practices. Objective. To understand the role of the NBC in the maternal and child health care network in Brazil. Method. A study with a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive approach carried out in a NBC in Ceará, with six nurses in 2018. Data collection was carried out through in-depth individual interviews. Thematic analysis was used to organize the results, with a discussion based on the theory of limited rationality. Results. The articulation of NBCs with primary care units through guided visits and tertiary-level hospitals for transfers in critical situations in an important element of the health network, with the obstetric nurse as articulator, however it is evident that there are challenges to face, whether in decision-making, in professional relationships within the health team or in the dynamics of care flows. Conclusions. Uncertainties in decision-making related to individual aspects constitute limitations for the development of good practices, the quality of care and the role of women, which also limits the NBC in the obstetric health network to achieve its full potential, reduce women's pilgrimages and maternal-infant mortality rates.
