Abstract

Conventional compaction generally creates a density gradient, which means that the density decreases with depth in the compacted layer. As a result, a large number of passes are required on thick pavement base layers for densification requirements in the lower parts of the layer to be meto Reduced-scale and full-scale testing of an innovative compactation príncíple has been carried out using several experimental machines. The príncíple consists on densifying the material as it is laid by applying vibration to the lower part of the layer and by simultaneously assisting compaction in the upper part of the layer with a víbratíng plate. The results, which consider the influence of geometry, vibration, the rate of travel and the nature of materials, allows us to assess the potential scope for applying the process and consider the outlook for developing an industrial prototype.
