Abstract

This paper presents quantitative results of the environmental impact and complexity of tunnels from an energy standpoint. The analysis uses the first law of thermodynamics and the mechanical characteristics of an earthy, supposedly elastic, isotropic and homogeneous material. The results, presented in both analytical and graphical form, show the influence of some geometric and mechanical parameters in the complexity, and therefore in the cost of tunnels.
