Abstract

Though the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) is the instrument that is most widely used for the adolescent population, information is scarce about its psychometric properties in Colombian teenagers. This study attempts to verify the internal consistency, dimensionality, and factorial invariance of RSES with regard to context and sex in adolescent school children. A validation study was conducted with 725 students aged 11–19 years (52.8% female) from two Colombian regions (Nariño and Boyacá). Estimations of internal consistency using McDonald’s omega, dimensional structure through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and factor invariance by sex and region of origin were done. RSES bifactorial and correlated structure (r=0.44) was confirmed with CFA. RSES in Colombian adolescents shows adequate internal consistency and a two-dimensional structure with McDonald’s omega of 0.78 and 0.65 for self-esteem and self-contempt, respectively, good fit χ 2(26) = 72.77; p ≤ .000; RMSEA=.05; CI 90% 0.03-0.06; CFI=.96 and strong strict invariance according to sex and partial invariance according to region. Out findings corroborate previous studies on the RSES. More research is necessary in Colombian contexts.
