Abstract
Background. Down syndrome is the most prevalent genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability, characterized by affecting multiple body systems, including the orofacial system, which is linked to vital functions, such as swallowing and chewing, essential for the feeding process. Objective: To explore and describe the characteristics of swallowing and chewing in children with Down Syndrome. Methods. Three advanced searches were performed in Pubmed, using the following key terms and Boolean operators: (down syndrome) AND (feeding disorders) NOT (review); (down syndrome) AND ((deglutition disorders) OR (dysphagia)) NOT (review); and (down syndrome) AND ((chewing disorders) OR (masticatory dysfunction)) NOT (review). In CINAHL Complete EBSCO, three searches were performed using the terms (down syndrome) AND (deglutition disorders) OR (dysphagia); (down syndrome) AND (feeding disorders) NOT (review); and (down syndrome) AND ((chewing disorders) OR (masticatory dysfunction)) NOT (review). Finally, three searches were made in Embase, using the same terms that were used in Pubmed. Results. After performing the search, a total of 279 articles were found, and after the selection process, 8 articles were included. In addition, reviewing the references of the chosen articles, two studies were included. Conclusions. Children with Down Syndrome present alterations in feeding and swallowing and chewing functions, from an early age, therefore, it is required that the professionals involved in the habilitation and rehabilitation of these functions detect them in time, in order to provide timely treatment to each patient and their family.
