Abstract

The neurosurgical ventriculitis is a complication with a worldwide incidence between 6-15 %, and 18 % in Latin America. Risk factors associated with this type of infection are related to the catheter perse, the process of pre surgical preparation, placement and manipulation of the ventriculostomy in post surgical. It has been found that microorganisms involved in this type of infection are Gram positive and Gram negative specially members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. Among the most common genera is Providencia stuartii; however, is an atypical microorganism in nosocomial infections related to central nervous system (CNS). Never the less, it has been found in three cases reported where was no infection of the CNS: two of these cases became in meningitis, and the third, an abscess. This report describes and analyzes a case of ventriculitis by Providencia stuartii.
