Abstract

This article deals with the videos by artists Rivane Neuenschwander and Cao Guimarães, Inventário das pequenas mortes (Sopro) (2000) and O inquilino (2010), and the film The Prize (2011) by Paula Markovitch as starting points for reflecting on life, creation, the body, and its territorialization. To this end, the concept of air as matter and metaphor of a creative energy, and the concept of spheres as allegorical forms and spatial abstractions of territories in constant dispute. Through a comparative methodology, the theoretical contributions of Peter Sloterdijk are used again to discuss the notions of inner space and outer space, and of Gaston Bachelard to analyze the spatial dimension from the phenomenology of the round and the idea of air as an element of creation. For its part, the notion of biopolitics and the role of the private and public sphere is analyzed through Giorgio Agamben’s concept of nuda vida, and the female body as territory of political dispute through Judith Butler’s and Carol Arcos’ concept of vulnerability. This formal, narrative, critical and theoretical analysis links the forms of the air with the three audiovisual works, which evidences, from an aesthetic reading the tensions that constitute the body, both physical and political, and its constant pendulum between the inside and the outside, between the public and the private, between life and death.
