Abstract
Introduction: Dental neglect occurs when children's oral health problems are neglected and are not addressed in a timely manner by their caregivers. Objectives: to identify the perspective of dentists, teachers in the public and community health areas of the dental schools of two Colombian universities, on dental neglect that affects early childhood. Methodology: qualitative phenomenological-descriptive study. Two online focus groups were conducted with 11 dentists, teachers in the areas of public and community health, with experience in early childhood. Thematic analysis was carried out with the support of the Atlas ti 22 software. Results: Participants agree that dental neglect affects oral health and the physical and emotional development of children. It involves cavities, pain, infections and dental loss. Often it is not deliberate, being difficult to identify; it can respond to educational deficiencies in the parents; exceeds family responsibility, including the State and health and education institutions. It is common in contexts of social inequality and in vulnerable families where the responsibility for parental care is delegated. Ignorance of the importance of temporary dentition and cultural barriers affect this phenomenon. Conclusions: According to the perspective of the participants, dental negligence in early childhood constitutes a complex problem against which improving the capacity of family and institutional caregivers to understand the what, how and why of temporary dentition is required. The dentist needs to be trained to recognize it, prevent it and act in a timely manner.
