Abstract

SUMMARY

Background: The trigeminal nerve gives origin to three branches: ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3). Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) causes pain when chewing and manipulating gums, urging to go to the dentist before the neurologist or neurosurgeon. Anatomically, TN affects the branches V1 (4%), V2 (23%), V3 (15%), V1 and V2 (16.5%), and V2 and V3 (32%). Objective: To identify the most common etiology of TN in patients treated at EsSalud Cusco from January 2019 to August 2022. Method: Non-experimental type, qualitative, quantitative, retrospective and cross-sectional approach; the sample, 127 computerized data from clinical histories with a diagnosis of TN, in Neurology, Neurosurgery and Dentistry of the Hospital EsSalud-Cusco; the instrument, the data collection sheet; the unit of analysis, the clinical history and the method, the indirect observation. Variables were measured in data collection sheets, by a single evaluator for the most common etiology variable; the scores, according to the predisposing factors and etiological factors; while for the TN variable, by the types of TN and the pain scales. Finally, the type of analysis was descriptive statistics. Results: Most common etiology variable: Predisposing factor, sex 79.5% and etiological factor, unknown etiology 55.1%. Variable TN: NT type, idiopathic 34.6%; of intense pain 59.1% according to the VAS scale. Conclusion: The average relationship of the most common etiology of TN has as a predisposing factor; sex, being the female the most affected at 79.5%; and as an etiological factor, unknown etiology at 55.1%.
