Abstract
Introduction: The care economy refers to unpaid work, related to maintaining the home or caring for other people in the home. Within these unpaid activities, breastfeeding can be included as a care practice that generates well-being. Objective: The purpose of this analysis is to calculate the cost of unpaid work for women, associated with breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life of infants. Methodology: A descriptive analysis of the cost of exclusive breastfeeding was carried out, with estimates based on the opportunity cost method, which attributes a wage value to the time it takes to do so. Results: It was estimated that during the first six months (exclusive breastfeeding) the cost of the time dedicated to breastfeeding was an average of $3 430 270 pesos (797.68 USD), with a range according to the proposed scenarios between $3 018 149 pesos (701.85 USD) and $4 209 826 pesos (978.96 USD), the highest difference between the values was found in the second and third months of lactation (21.53 %) and the lowest difference between the third and fourth months (10.94 %). Conclusion: The results allowed to give a value to the time dedicated to breastfeeding that represented between three and four times the Current Legal Monthly Minimum Wage in Colombia and although the practice of Breastfeeding is a process in which the participation of the family is intended, is biologically exerted by women.
