Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate the scientific production of Oliva Lopez- Arellano thought, in order to verify his contribution to the approach of the social determination of the health-disease process in the capitalist mode of production. To this end, a critical review of its production was carried out through three repositories of scientific studies, two in portals the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and PubMed and, in a direct database, the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). After the selection processes, 14 articles were chosen and discussed based on two dimensions that facilitate the form of construction of the author's thinking: i) approach on the social determination of the health-disease process; ii) approach on the relationship with the capitalist mode of production. Specifically, some discussions summarized in four categories were apprehended in López-Arellano's scientific production:work, Latin”

“American health thinking”, “State and political economy”, “health needs”. With the evidence found, it was possible to conclude that López-Arellano's production contributes to the realization of a critical approach to the health context and its relationship with capitalist mode of production, even if it does not directly explain Marx's Social Theory in their theoretical contributions. It is a fundamental contribution to indicate challenges for the field of collective health/ social medicine in Latin America, making it possible to think about health in the context of contemporary capitalism.

Keywords: social determination of health, thinking, capitalism, Latin America.
