Abstract

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis has been associated as a risk factor for preterm  deliveries, and it has been found women with this experience have worse periodontal status than those who have had term deliveries. OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of Periodontitis in women with preterm deliveries, and whether there is vaginosis and diabetes simultaneously. METHODS: Observational descriptive. The sample consisted of 102 women, who had experience of preterm delivery not more than 50 days before, and between June and August, year 2002. Those women with recent bacterial endocarditis, valvular changes or anticoagulated were exclude of the sample. The women belonged to the Kangaroo Moms Program, in Bogota, Colombia. Anamnesis and periodontal exam (bleeding, periodontal pocket, and loss of attachment level) were carried out to get the clinical information. RESULTS: 42 women out of 102 suffered from Periodontitis, 8 from vaginosis and 5 from diabetes. From this part of the sample with Periodontitis, 4 of them presented simultaneously Vaginosis, and one case Diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: 41.17% of the sample in this study presented signs associated with periodontitis. 6,8% presented Vaginosis, and 9,5% with Periodontitis had Vaginosis at the same time. 4.9% had diabetes and only 2.3% presented both, diabetes and periodontitis. There was not simultaneous presence of all the studied pathologies.
