Abstract

Meconium ileus (MI) is defined as meconium impaction, usually in the distal ileum, which
produces intestinal obstruction in the newborn, usually in the first few days. This can be
produced by different causes, however, cystic fibrosis represents 15-20% of cases. It is during
the postnatal diagnosis that the basic neonatal screening becomes especially important, due to
the ease of its performance and the obligatory nature of its processing (1). We present the
case of a newborn with prenatal diagnosis and postnatal findings of intestinal obstruction led
to surgery finding meconium pearls. Its diagnosis, evolution, complications and management
challenges are described.
