Abstract

Emergency cricothyrotomy is a procedure to urgently perform an aperture in the cricothyroid membrane to establish a patent airway. It’s usually the last viable resort for the management of a failed airway (can’t intubate, can’t ventilate) scenario, and therefore it’s impact on morbidity and mortality is invaluable. A review of the literature was carried out and different variants of the technique of procedure as well as subsequent ventilation were found. Bearing in mind that the complications increase proportionally with the inexperience of the provider, in the present article such techniques and knowledge are reviewed in an academic fashion in order to strengthen the provider’s emergent airway management skills.
