Abstract
To better our understanding of the leadership of universities, this study analyzes the leadership style of university rectors, taking into account individual factors, organizational characteristics and the features of the society in which they are immersed. The qualitative analysis was done with rectors of Mexican universities. The results showed that, due to the eclectic nature of universities, their many objectives, the highly professional profile of their staffs, the growing complexity of their organization and ambit and the resulting uncertainties, the rectors combine transformative and transactional leadership strategies and only play a passive role in specific situations.
