Abstract
unctional decline in hospitalized elderly adults is characterized by the loss of at least one of the basic activities regarding the functionality two weeks prior to the onset of acute illness. It has associated risk factors that could be modified during hospitalization, therefore the importance of the early identification and well-timed intervention. It is important to know the clinical entity´s background, due to the short or long term multiple associated complications that could unexpectedly appear; for example, increased hospital stay, medical complication presence, increased institutionalization risk, higher costs for the health system and increased mortality rate.
