Abstract
Estamos ante una obra imprescindible para educadores e investigadores educativos en la cual se expone un conjunto de argumentos sobre la naturaleza, los límites, las potencialidades y las consecuencias constructivas y destructivas de la evaluación como actividad social. El libro introduce al lector en las funciones históricas de la evaluación y hace explícitos algunos de los supuestos históricos arraigados acerca de las evaluaciones formales (capítulo primero), uno de los cuales es justamente la creencia común de que los exámenes pueden revelar la capacidad subyacente de los sujetos. Otro supuesto, ambién ampliamente extendido, es la presencia y la necesidad de las pruebas en educación, de modo que su naturalización ha llevado a un escaso cuestionamiento sobre su misma finalidad y sobre los diversos usos que adopta en las sociedades (capítulo primero).
