Abstract

Objective: Retrospective description of postoperative outcomes of patients who underwent neurosurgical brain stereotactic guided procedures at the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio during the period July 2009-July 2011.

Materials and Methods: A review of medical records of 78 patients who were taken to neurosurgical stereotactic guided procedures at the Hospital Universitario San Ignaci. We reviewed the clinical characteristics of patients, the location of the lesions on neuroimaging, management, type of procedure of each patient, functional results and outcomes in the short and medium term.

Results: 78 patients who underwent neurosurgical brain stereotactic guided procedures between July 2009 to July 2011 at the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio. The 64.1 % (n = 50) were men. The location of the lesions were in order of frequency sub-thalamic ganglia, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, thalamus, cortico-subcortical junction, brainstem, fronto-temporal location, occipital lobe, parieto-occipital location, and at the skull’s base.

Discussion: Implementing guided stereotactic neurosurgical procedures remains one of the best options in dealing with deep brain pathologies or difficult access. In both Colombia and the rest of the world, these are procedures with low morbidity and mortality. It must, however, develop multicenter studies that allow us to observe the development of stereotactic neurosurgery in our country, also develop studies with a larger continuity to assess the long-term outcomes.

Conclusions: Whatever type of stereotactic guided procedure the rate of complications does not exceed 5 %, similar rates to those obtained from the global literature.
