Abstract

Centenarians are defined as those living more than 100 years.

Objective: To describe the health status of centenarians whose requiring care in the emergency room of the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio in the last 7 years.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional observational study. The reference population was all patients of 100 or more years who visited the emergency department from 2005 to 2012, with a total of 29 centenarians attended.

Results: Of the 962,634 visits to the emergency room only 0.0035% (34 queries) corresponded to centenarians. The average age fell to 100.8 ± 1.03 years; in the hospitalized group was 101.4 ± 1.2. The most prevalent geriatric syndromes is delirium (31%), followed by dementia and two drops (15%).

Conclusions: In-hospital mortality reached 53% of centenarians attended in this period. The final diagnosis in most centenarians was community acquired pneumonia, followed by decompensated heart failure and other infectious diseases, correlate data with previous studies.
