Abstract
Introduction: The correct functioning of the placenta guarantees an adequate fetal nutritional status.
Objective: To histomorphologically characterize the early placenta of biomodels fed a cafeteria diet.
Materials and methods: Experimental study. 18 Wistar rats were sorted into control group (CTRL=10) and experimental group (CAF=8). CTRL fed with standard diet and CAF with cafeteria diet. On gestation day 12.5, 18 placentas were extracted, histochemically processed, photographed, and measured using a Leica DM750 microscope and ImageProPlus 7.0 software. Evaluated variables: central thickness, total area, thickness, and area of the placental labyrinth (ZL).
Results: Fetoplacental unit weight: CAF: 0.2368 ± 0.0068 g; CTRL: 0.2622 ± 0.0096 g; central thickness: CAF: 1727± 151 µm; CTRL: 1936± 140 µm; total placental area: CAF: 8.130 x 106 ± 0. 511 x 106 µm2; CTRL: 9.493 x 106 ± 0.587 x 106 µm2; thickness ZL: CAF: 409± 56 µm; CTRL: 492 ± 26 µm; area ZL: CAF: 1.240 x 106 ± 0.253 x 106 µm2; CTRL: 1.329 x 106 ± 0.165 x 106 µm2). No significant differences were found.
Conclusions: No alterations of placental morphometry were evidenced. It is recommended to study other variables such as degree of vascularization and specific molecular transporters.
